Six months ago, Marcus T. didn’t have a permanent address. Today, he’s earning $54,000 a year as an IT Support Specialist — and he credits a 12-week program that cost him absolutely nothing.
This is the story of how a homeless Army veteran went from sleeping on a friend’s couch to landing his first career-track job. It’s also the story of what’s possible when someone is given a real chance.
A Veteran Without a Path Forward
Marcus served 6 years in the U.S. Army before receiving an honorable discharge in 2022. Like many veterans, he struggled with the transition to civilian life. The skills that made him an outstanding soldier — discipline, problem-solving, working under pressure — weren’t translating into job offers.
“Nobody understood what my military experience meant in the civilian world,” Marcus told us. “I’d apply for jobs and either get ghosted or told I was ‘overqualified’ for entry-level work and ‘underqualified’ for everything else.”
By early 2025, Marcus was staying with a friend and running out of options. A VA counselor mentioned Help Industries and the free CompTIA training program. “I didn’t think it was real,” he admitted. “Everything free has a catch. But I had nothing to lose, so I applied.”
12 Weeks That Changed Everything
Marcus enrolled in the Help Industries IT & Cybersecurity program in February 2025. The 12-week program covers three CompTIA certifications: A+ (hardware and software fundamentals), Network+ (networking), and Security+ (cybersecurity). All exam fees are covered by donor support.
“The instructors understood where I was coming from,” Marcus said. “Several of them were veterans themselves. They didn’t just teach the material — they taught us how to apply it in real jobs.”
The class met four days a week, a combination of in-person labs and online coursework. For Marcus, the structure was familiar and welcome. “After the Army, I needed that routine. It kept me focused.”
In week 8, Marcus passed his CompTIA A+ exam — on his first attempt. He passed Network+ in week 10 and Security+ in week 12.
From Certification to Career in 30 Days
Help Industries doesn’t just train students — it connects them directly with employers. Within two weeks of completing the program, Marcus had three interviews through the organization’s employer partner network.
He accepted an IT Support Specialist role at a regional technology firm in his third week of job searching. Starting salary: $54,000 per year with full benefits.
“I cried when I got the offer,” he said. “Not because I was surprised I could do the job — I always knew I could. I cried because someone finally gave me the chance to prove it.”
By June 2025, Marcus had moved into his own apartment for the first time since leaving the military.
Why the Program Works
Marcus’s story is not unique at Help Industries. The organization reports an 87% job placement rate among graduates, with an average starting salary above $50,000 for IT and cybersecurity roles.
The combination of factors that drive that outcome: industry-recognized certifications with all exam costs covered, small class sizes (maximum 15 students), instructors with real-world IT experience, and a direct pipeline to 50+ employer partners who actively recruit graduates.
Most importantly, the program is free — removing the most common barrier that stops motivated people from advancing.
What This Means for Donors
Marcus’s 12-week program was made possible by donations from people who believe in second chances. The cost of training and certifying one student — including all exam fees, materials, and career support — is approximately $1,000.
That $1,000 investment returned Marcus to self-sufficiency, reduced veteran homelessness by one person, generated tens of thousands of dollars in annual tax revenue, and connected an employer with a skilled, motivated employee.
“Tell the people who donated: thank you,” Marcus said. “You didn’t just fund a training program. You funded my future.”
